Horse Racing Betting: Each-Way & Non-Runners

Racing markets have distinctive settlement rules. Place terms and whether a horse starts can change the result of a bet.

BET STRUCTURE

Win, place and each-way explained

A win bet depends on the selected horse winning. An each-way wager is commonly structured as two separate parts: a win stake and a place stake, with the place portion paying under the published fraction and number of places for the race. The full cost of an each-way bet is therefore typically twice the stated unit stake.

Win stakeRequires first place unless the market specifies otherwise.
Place stakeCan pay for an eligible placing under published terms.
Place fractionA stated fraction of the original odds for place settlement.
Runner countCan change the number of qualifying places.
Non-runnerTreatment depends on bet timing and promotion.
Dead heatSpecial settlement applies where positions tie.

EXAMPLE

Each-way worked concept

Illustrative only: a £5 each-way wager normally commits £10, split into a £5 win part and a £5 place part. Whether either part returns anything depends on the finishing position, available place terms, odds and any relevant deductions.

Do not assume all races offer the same number of places or the same place fraction.

BET TIMING

Non-runner no bet differs from ante-post risk

Sky Bet’s rules distinguish bets on a selection that does not run from advance ante-post wagers. “Non-runner no bet” can mean the stake is returned when a horse fails to run under applicable terms; some ante-post bets can instead lose. The exact market type and promotional conditions matter.

SETTLEMENT

Deductions, places and settlement changes

Withdrawn runners can lead to deductions such as Tattersalls Rule 4 where applicable. Reduced fields may also change place terms. These details affect actual return even when the original displayed odds have not been forgotten.

Questions to ask before a racing wager

  1. Is the selection a win or each-way bet, and what is the full stake?
  2. How many places are paid, and at what fraction?
  3. Is it an early price, board price or ante-post market?
  4. What happens if the selection does not run?
  5. Could withdrawals cause a deduction?
